Lost And Found
Jay was an ordinary high school boy. He lived in the least ordinary place you can ever imagine. This place is called Cancun. Let me tell you a little bit more about Jay’s home. It is a place where you can do almost anything (by “almost” I mean that law is nothing more than a few suggestions you can take into consideration before jumping into action) you can think of. People usually party all day long so that night arrives without them noticing it, and then they can party some more. Yes, Cancun is a place where everything is right, except if you live in it.
Anyway, after living 18 years in the same town, with the same people, and experiencing everything that this place had to offer, Jay thought he knew the world. Not “the world”, come on, that would only make him look stupid, by world I mean he could see other people in a way very few others could. Now, let’s not make him a kind of super-intelligent-oh-my-nobody-understands-me-know-it-all, because clearly he is not. When he saw people there, he thought he knew every kind of person you could find anywhere. The cool guy, the moron, the genius, the nice guy, the nice girl, the party boy, the book worm, the friend, the traitor, the “femme fatale”, the hypocrite, the best friend, the rich boy, the poor girl, etc. Jay lived here (not without complaining about a few things), but he liked it, he liked it very much indeed. He had friends, family, and a reason to live. Sometimes he wondered if he’ll ever need anything else, his mind always answered “no”.
One day, Jay’s parents told him they were moving. “Like to another city?”
Yes. Like to another city, and not just any city, they were moving to Mexico City.
This hit him hard. Not (spoiler alert) Dumbledore dies kind of hard, but really, really hard. His first thoughts were about his friends, about his house, about his teachers, about his home. This place he had come to love so much, but never took the time to pay attention to that tiny detail. He was bummed, a new beginning, new people, new friends (hopefully), new everything. After this, every second left in Cancun was unique. Nothing would ever be the same, and before he knew it, that fatal day arrived.
He said his goodbyes, some went good, some fall right between “your dog ran away” and “the paper is due on Monday”. And so he left.
Jay felt completely lost. This new life was not something he had planned. Nevertheless, after a two hours flight, and one night without sleep, there he was, standing alone in the middle of a classroom, filled with people who knew each other. Smiles everywhere, hugs, friends saying hello again as if they had not seen each other for months. He remembered all the people who had come to say goodbye, their friendship was something he knew would stay forever, but even as this thought comforted him, he felt the loneliest since he had arrived.
All of a sudden, something caught his eye. More like someone actually. He saw a girl. First thing he noticed was that she was pretty, next thing (the important thing) was that she looked just as puzzled and alone as he did. He sat right next to her, hoping she would look at him, and after five seconds that seemed like ages, she spoke.
“Hi!” she said, with a bubbly voice and a big smile.
“Hi” he answered, unable to come up with something better to say to a complete stranger. After a weird silence they both smiled, and as Jay saw her, he thought that maybe, only maybe, this was not going to be as bad as he had imagined.
